About:
The mayor's chair and four seats on the Lubbock City Council were up for election on May 7, 2016. Since Glen Robertson, who was elected mayor in 2012, ran as a Republican candidate to the U.S. House in 2016, Lubbock will elect a new mayor. Four candidates filed for this race, including current councilman Victor Hernandez.

The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 19, 2016. Three of the six city council positions—Districts 2, 4, and 6—are up for election. There will also be a special election for District 1 of the city council on the same day.  The filing deadline for candidates to file for that seat was March 7, 2016. A runoff election, if necessary, will occur on May 24, 2016. The elections for both Districts 1 and 2 are both open races, so Lubbock is ensured two new members of the city council and a new mayor.
